BEFORE STARTING THIS PROCEDURE BACKUP YOUR UNIT!
The Palm V/Vx is held together by a special glue that loosens when
heated. Place the unit to be dissembled on a hard surface that will not
burn such as a piece of wood. Be use to use gloves when handling the unit
during and after using the hair dryer to loosen the glue holding the front
and back cases shell together. Make sure not to over-heat your PDA and
that the heat from the hair dryer is distributed evenly to all sides of
the unit.
Step 1
Position the Palm V/Vx so that screen is facing down.
If you heat the screen directly with the
hair it will melt and be destroyed. Be sure to keep the screen
face down while heating the shell.
Step 2
Heat the shell while moving the hair dryer back and forth as
shown here. Heat each side for about 30 seconds.
Step 3
Slowly move the hair dryer around the case heating the shell
evenly.

Step 4
Be sure to heat all four sides unitll the glue is heated enough
to remove the front and back shells.
Note that the case will be VERY HOT!
(DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERS to remove the front and back case shells.
Step 5
Once the shells are adequately heated, they should lift off
easily.
Here is back shell has been removed.
Step 6
Here both shells have been removed. Allow the unit to cool before
continuing.
Step 7
To separate the motherboard and screen you must flip up the
cable clamp holding the ribbon cable attached to the screen. (Do
not exert too much pressure as the cable clamps are easily broken)
Once you flip up the cable clamp, the ribbon cable is easily removed.
Step 8
Flip up this cable clamp too.
Step 9
Here both cable clamps have been opened. Now the ribbon cables
may be removed from the motherboard connectors.
Step 10
Here is the battery connector on the motherboard.
Step 11
Disconnect the battery if you are replacing the screen, motherboard
or battery.
You do not need to remove the battery if you are replacing the buttons.
Step 12
The screen may now be removed by applying slight downward pressure
to the battery
Step 13
Carefully bend the regulator board attached to the battery
up and rotate the frame so that the battery regulator clears the
battery opening in the motherboard.
Step 14
Here the screen (LCD/glass top) has been separated from the
motherboard..
If you are only replacing the 'glass top', buttons or motherboard,
you do not need to remove the battery.
Step 15
To remove the battery, use the hair fryer to heat the glue holding
the battery to the screen.
To reassemble your unit, follow
steps 5 through 15 above in reverse order then steps 16 and 17 below. |
Step 16
After reassembling the unit, make use the power and backlight buttons properly function before sealing the case.
Use clamps to hold the case shells in place while heating the
unit evenly on all sides melting the glue and sealing the case.
Step 17
Heat the case evenly on all sides then let the unit cool with
the clamps in place.
